La madurez del pacto literario - Análisis de la verosimilitud en "La fortuna de Matilda Turpin", de Álvaro Pombo
Abstract
The aim of this essay is to examine how verisimilitude or truthlikeness is presented in La fortuna de Matilda Turpin, by the Spanish writer Álvaro Pombo (2006). In particular, the study examines the role of the narrator at the time of giving credence to the story which is presented in this novel. Through this analysis also it is seeked to determine the changing role of the narrator in Spanish novels in recent decades. After the Spanish Civil War wanted the realistic writers wanted to explain the society through many specific details. They took the role of informants of social reality. During the last decades the Spanish society has changed considerably, both economically and socially. The reader of novels has now much more literary experience. In this context we analyze the changing role of the narrator at the time of giving credence to the story. To carry out this study it has been assumed the analysis of the narrative of Genette who distinguishes the narrator of the focusers. Through the study of the distance and the perspective of the narrator the relationship with the reader is analyzed, both when the narrator acts as a human, and when the narrator acts as the author of the novel. This study reveals that the narrator is no longer so focused on providing details that make the story credible, understood as a copy of reality. The narrator gives the novel credibility in order to maintain a consistent fiction that allows the reader to move into the story. This relationship between the narrator and the reader falls into one more mature society in literary terms and differs from other novels of the past.
