Zalalyte, Vejuna
This thesis explores the effect of New Urbanist planning theory on facilitating sustainable local living behaviours in inner city neighbourhoods. Drawing on the empirical evidence of two New Urbanist neighbourhoods in Lithuania and Sweden, the residents’ everyday lived experiences of the key guiding New Urbanist principles of density, mixed land use and walkability are explored. The effect of the built environment on local living behaviours in terms of the use of local services and travel behaviours are revealed.
This study finds that geographical proximity to local services makes everyday life more convenient. Respondents choose the essential everyday services based on the closest option available and often choose to walk. For destinations within 1 km of the residence, respondents perceive walking and cycling as the preferred modes to the car, resulting in increased mix of modes and a reduction on car reliance. However, not all respondents’ activities are expected, or even desired, to be found locally, as there remains a wish for a change of scenery and to explore other areas occasionally. Respondents travel outside of the local area for occasional and more specialised activities in search of quality and variety. The study reveals that the design of the built environment is not the sole cause of residents’ behaviours and that personal preferences and values, as well as sociodemographic characteristics play a role. The respondents’ lived everyday experiences of density and mixed land uses also varies largely by sociodemographic profile and personal values, suggesting that there is a layer of subjectivity in how New Urbanist neighbourhoods are perceived.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the region of the world with the most widespread poverty. One indication of this is the lack of electricity, with two-thirds of households lacking it. In this part of the world, the dependence on foreign resources for the energy sector is high and
foreign investment is central to the development of increased electrification. These resources are important not only to combat the region's poverty, but also to combat climate change and achieve the UN's global sustainability goals. Solar energy is today seen as the energy source with the greatest potential to tackle the regional problems surrounding sub-Saharan Africa, thanks to the natural conditions that exist. Swedish investment actors have also understood this, and some are now participating in the
development of solar energy in the region with investments. The purpose of this study is to find out which strategies different Swedish actors use when investing in solar energy, as previous research has reported several challenges in the implementation of these. The purpose is therefore also to find out what challenges some selected Swedish actors have
identified in their business practice. To achieve the purpose, the authors use two qualitative research methods, semi-structured interviews with Swedish actors operating in the region and a qualitative document analysis of the same actors' official documents.
The results showed that the strategies used in solar energy investments are similar to those identified by previous research. These strategies involve either smaller companies adapting their business models to the Pay-As-You-Go model or NGOs or development organizations raising capital for solar energy projects. The latter has evolved as the demand for more
private capital has grown for the solar energy market, involving more private organizations in
addition to development organizations and NGOs in the region as a result of a growing population and an increasingly acute climate situation. The challenges and barriers to investment in the region still include a lack of financial frameworks, weak rule of law, lack of knowledge, corruption and more. Although progress and important reforms are being made in
some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, new challenges such as conflict, pandemics and famine are emerging.

Ljungblad, Alice
Previous research shows that rural areas in Sweden are depopulating as more residents choose to settle in urban areas. This means that the social sustainability of rural areas is negatively affected. Social sustainability involves maintaining and improving the quality of life for people. In another phase, there is an increasing demand for minerals, something that Sweden has good access to. This essay examines the role of the mining industry in promoting social sustainability in rural areas, as well as whether there are similarities and differences in how different actors work to increase the social sustainability of rural areas through the mining industry. This is done by applying significant criteria from a Social Impact Assessment (SIA). The work is limited to Sweden's southernmost mining town, Zinkgruvan. Semi-structured interviews were used to determine how local actors work to improve social sustainability related to the mining industry. The results show that the criteria from the SIA are sufficient to say something about the social sustainability of rural areas in relation to the mining industry. It also shows that the mining company operating in the town makes a difference in some of the criteria but not all. The reason for this is that they cannot influence criteria that are governed by, for example, political decisions. What the mining company can contribute to making a difference is what they are involved in. The mining industry is possible for lifting the social sustainability in a rural area affected by depopulation.

The European Union, through its Green Deal, aims to become the first climate-neutral region by 2050. All member states have committed to this goal, including the intermediate target of a 55% emission reduction by 2030. The member states have presented short-term and long-term strategies outlining how they will achieve these objectives. Consequently, the purpose is to examine how emission structures differ and have changed from 1990 to 2021 for seven countries within the EU, as well as how the short-term and long-term climate strategies have been designed to reach the targets for 2030 and 2050. The chosen method for this paper is a multi-research approach. The first part consists of a secondary analysis of the EU’s emission inventories to compile statistics on countries' territorial net emissions and the emission levels of five different sectors. The second part consists of a text analysis of the countries' short-term and long-term strategies. The results from the first part show that the energy sector has a high contribution to countries' emissions, while the land-use sector has opportunities for emission reduction. The results from the second part demonstrate that the levels of ambition vary drastically among countries, but also that the targets for 2050 are considerably more ambitious than those for 2030 for all countries in the study. The discussion reveals that different conditions related to energy, policy, land-use, and economy vary among different countries, laying the foundation for enabling emission reduction.
