  • Swedish Imperialism: A Study on Sweden’s Military-Industrial Complex and its Role in the US-led Imperialist Bloc

The destruction of Gaza and the war in Ukraine indicate a definitive qualitative shift in the US-led imperialist system, which is becoming increasingly hostile and belligerent in response to its waning hegemony. This dissertation analyses Sweden’s role, particularly its military-industrial complex, in imperialist wars and US-led military interventions since the 1990s for the purpose of theoretically conceptualising Swedish imperialism in the 21st century. Historically, Sweden has integrated itself into the capitalist global economy by navigating and accommodating the interests of greater imperialist powers. Swedish imperialism in the current period is characterised by a similar vassalisation and subordination to the US-led imperialist bloc, composed primarily of Western countries in Europe and North America. The militarisation of Sweden through the accession to NATO, closer military cooperation with the USA, and growing military budgets and weapons exports – combined with Sweden’s exceptionally advanced arms industry, is at the same time a reflection of Sweden’s function in the imperialist system as well as imperialism’s increasing contradictions. The Swedish ruling class has concrete material interests in upholding the capitalist-imperialist world order as it ensures the continued plunder and super-exploitation of the Global South, siphoning profits and wealth into the imperial core.
